Women in Construction

Women in Construction

At G&F Concrete Cutting, women don’t just have a seat at the table, they help build the table.

As a woman-owned business, G&F is led by Rita Ferguson, a pioneer whose career has been defined by resilience, advocacy, and inclusion.

G&F is breaking barriers by training and integrating women into the traditionally male-dominated field of concrete cutting. This initiative reflects Rita’s dedication to advancing diversity and creating pathways for women in the trades.

“I advise women in construction to work hard, stay curious, lift others up, and never be afraid to fail — every challenge is a step toward growth.”

Rita Ferguson, Co-Founder & President
G&F Concrete Cutting Contractors

Rita began her journey not in construction, but in art. When an economic downturn forced her to pivot careers, she embraced an opportunity in concrete cutting alongside her husband, Greg. Together, they grew G&F from a small subcontractor into one of California’s most respected specialty contractors.

What began as survival turned into leadership. Under Rita’s guidance, G&F became certified as a Woman-Owned Business (WBE) and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) — opening doors for diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity across the industry.

Her entrepreneurial spirit also led to innovation. She and Greg founded Merit Saw, a groundbreaking saw manufacturing company that grew to international recognition.

“Work together and be supportive. Don’t put someone down to lift yourself up. Model behavior you can be proud of, and don’t be afraid to fail — failure is part of growth.”

Rita believes that leadership starts with perseverance, professionalism, and purpose — qualities that define women who are reshaping the construction landscape.

Building Opportunities for the

Next Generation of Women

Rita’s involvement with programs like Women in Construction (WIC) and The Laborers Training School Apprenticeship Program underscores her commitment to mentorship and empowerment.

She encourages women to:

  • Seek training and certifications.
  • Ask questions and keep learning.
  • Surround yourself with people who lift you higher.
